Leftover Turkey Document Friday: What day is Thanksgiving this year?

November 26, 2010

The American Thanksgiving holiday falls on the fourth Thursday of November.  The numerical date of the holiday changes from year to year, which can lead to slight confusion while making plans around the end of November.  Well, today’s Hot Doc shows that even Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Deputy National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft had trouble nailing down Turkey Day.  Take a look:

23? 29? 22? 20? 21?

It’s unclear which government Kissinger thought it was “idiotic” to keep waiting because they weren’t “boys from Iowa” (?!).  But we do know that Kissinger completed his sixth trip to China and a took a tour of the Middle East in mid-November 1973.  Nixon ended up staying home; he explained that he was not a crook on 17 November 1973.  Happy Thanksgiving!  Gobble gobble!
